MEET THE FEMALE HAND PUMP REPAIR TECHNICIAN WHO IS A FACE OF HOPE IN HER COMMUNITY

It is always a calling to devote your time to your community’s transformation; Jacqueline Akello one of the female hand pump repair technicians, who attended a refresher training for hand pump repair mechanics organised by DWU and Alebtong District Local Government, said she has always derived her joy from repairing a well and seeing a child drinking a well repaired by her.

Jacqueline Akello, 23, from Oumu B, Abukamula Parishattended a short course on well repair held in Lira town (Lira District) with her focus on making sure the well she drinks from does not break down, because of the experience she went through whenever her community’s well broke down; where it often took the Water Source and Sanitation Committee (WSSC) up to 2 months to access a local hand pump mechanic to repair the well and during that waiting period she would have to walk for 1km to access a protected spring which was located in another village.

It therefore came as a blessing when she was nominated by the Abukamula  Parish Development Communitee in Omoro Sub-County to be among the 3 hand pump repair mechanics to be trained, she will now be over seeing the operation and functionality of 10 water sources allocated to her under the Preventative Maintenance  Model. Well-equipped; she is now the face of hope in her community.
